[ Moved from inappropriate thread to it's own post]
I couldnt find this question anywhere and thought it might be appropriate for this string. My question is regarding film sound design. What are some of your favorite sound design examples in films (past and present) and who are some of your favorite sound designers? (excluding yourself of course)
I'm on my Christmas break and am looking to catch up on some movie listening.
Happy Holidays

Two of my favorite sound design efforts are Blade Runner and Alien, for their atmosphere and detail, but I never did find out who did them (I suspect Bud Alper - the credit "sound design" wasn't in wide use at the time, first being introduced in the credits of Star Wars in 1977).
Just about any Pixar movie has outstanding sound design and i always get a kick from hearing movies (as ell as by watching them).
My favorite sound designer is Alan Splet.
And most of the more interesting sound design I've heard recently tends to be fro Asian movies, anime included (see "A Tale of Two Sisters", Ghost In The Shell 2" etc).
Btw, it's easy enough to start a new thread with a post of your own.

I have to agree with you on that one. Kenji Kawaii (Ghost in The Shell 2) is an excellent musician and the soundscape fit the movie perfectly. I heard from a few friends in the states that the UK team that dubbed it in English screwed it up though. I certainly hope not, since it is a pretty good movie.

A Tale of Two Sisters certainly did have some interesting sound design. I'll also agree with B that Alan Splet is one of the greats of sound design.
Alien 3 also had some pretty interesting sounds to it, but the man's name escapes me at the moment...all I know is they had an entire segment about it on the DVD special features.

Elliot Goldenthal did the score for Alien3, it's one of my fav soundtracks ever!!! The brothers Gerlich did the sounddesign, they were also on the dvd. But there where some troubles combining the sounddesign and the score, 'cause Elliot did already use al lot of sounds in his score. One of the last things Elliot says on that segment is that he didn't think the movie sounds all that good, but I have to say the movie's music and sounds are amazing. And that soundtrack should be top-of-your-list if you haven't it already

Goldenthal was a student of John Corigliano and you should check out his body of work if you like Goldenthal orchestral arrangements.

Hi! First of all I should say hello from barcelona to everybody !!
I absolutely love Alan R Splet work! (does anybody have the 3 x cds of his work?).
Some interesting sound designs on late movies are Panic Room (there´s a special feature about it on the special 3 x dvd). I´m also been enjoying the minimalistic sound design of the movie Elephant (Gus Van Zant), and Requiem for a dream.
...but here´s my question...I see a great abuse over the sound design in the new hollywood movies? (usually the trailers or previews you see on the movie theater are basically a sound design work!!!!!)

Note that the third disc is the work of his wife's, with whom he often collaborated.
